Grocery Bag Holder - Tutorial

Seb has a textiles project for which he needs to make a textile item.  Not one for making something just for the sake of it Isoon realised that I needed a new grocery bag holder as my shop bought one (from Spain) has recently fallen apart.   This seemed like an ideal project for Seb to undertake and I was really impressed with how well Seb did in making this and thought it would be a good and easy project to share.

You will need:

8 rectangles of fabric 11cm by 55 cm

Kitchen and dress making scissors

Sewing machine

Cotton thread

iron

Safety pin

Thin elastic

Short piece of ribbon

1.     Use greaseproof paper, a ruler or tape measure, a pencil and kitchen scissors to measure and cut out a template pattern ( a rectangle shape measuring 11 cm by 55 cm)

2.    Pin the template pattern to a scrap of fabric and carefully cut the material using dress making scissors

3.    Remove the pattern from the fabric and repeat with other scraps of fabric until you have eight rectangles of fabric (ideally in complementary colours / patterns)

4.    Thread a sewing machine with the thread colour of your choice and  zig-zag stitch around the edge of each rectangle to stop it from fraying.

5.    Pin together two strips of fabric along one long edge (right sides of the fabric together)

6.    Adjust the stitch length on your sewing machine to stitch length 2.

      7.  Sew the two pieces of material together along one edge with a seam allowance of 10            mm (using reverse stitch at both ends to secure the thread.  You can remove the
pins  as you sew to avoid sewing over them.

8.    Pin to the next strip of fabric (again right sides together) and sew that long edge too.  Continue until all eight strips of fabric are joined together in one long piece.

9.    Using an ironing board and iron, press the seams on the reverse of the fabric until they are all flat.  Press each seam according to the direction in which it naturally wishes to lay.

10. Turn over the long edge of the bottom strip of fabric and pin (to the reverse of the material), a seam allowance of approximately ¼ inch in place.  Sew along the seam leaving enough room (approximately 15mm) to later thread through a narrow piece of elastic.  Use reverse stitch at each end to secure the thread.

11. Repeat the above step to make a similar seam on the reverse side of the top strip of fabric.

12. Use a small safety pin to pierce the end of a thin piece of elastic and then using the pin as a guide, thread the elastic through one of the seams.

13. Secure one end of the elastic securely in place by sewing it to the inside of the seam edge.

14. Pull the elastic taut and bunch up the seam fabric.  Cut the elastic at your chosen length and stitch the end to the inside of the seam edge.

15. Repeat steps 12 to 14 for the other seam.

16. Turn the fabric right sides together and pin along the long edges to allow a seam of approximately ½ inch.

17. Sew along the seam with a seam allowance of approximately 10 mm and use reverse stitch at each end to secure the thread.

18. Take a short piece of ribbon (an appropriate length for however long you want the handle). Turn up the end of a piece of ribbon and stitch it to the reverse side of the top of your bag.  Attach and stitch the other end of the ribbon to the other side of the bag.

19. Turn the bag the right way out and stuff with carrier bags

 20.  Hang ready for use.

Halloween & Bonfire Celebrations

Saturday morning was an early start up at 4.30am to be driven to Newquay airport for our flight home.

It was quite a stressful flight as although we took off slightly early we ended up circling for ages when we got back to Gatwick.  Nat was getting very upset and difficult and kept trying to take off his seatbelt.  Finally, as we started our descent, he fell fast asleep.

Anyway we eventually met up with David and soon made our way home.

It is lovely to be back home and with my husband again - although, we had a really really nice break away!

Saturday afternoon we went to a fancy dress Halloween / Bonfire Night party at our neighbours Nia and Kyle's house.

We weren't too keen to go in Halloween costumes but found a happy compromise by going as a vicar and a nun!

The party was great fun and it was great to meet Nia and Kyle's lovely friends.

Kyle had built a bonfire in the garden and we had a few fireworks.

Nia had cooked some delicious pumpkin soup, Chilli con Carne and Wild Rice and some really tasty toffee apple cookies and ghost meringues.

After the party we went along to a local Firework display which was a half hour display of fireworks set to music - really really good and a fantastic display.

An aMAZEing Muddy Day

Had a lovely lie-in this morning which is practically unheard of - didn't wake until nearly 9am.

After breakfast we wrapped up warm and treked across the fields and muddy paths over to Glendurgan gardens where we had a lovely walk.

We also had lots of fun in the beautiful maze.  However, we just could not find the way to the middle and had to give up!

Seb and Nathaniel cheated and crawled through a gap in the hedge!!

After that we went into the Garden cafe and I had a delicious bowl of Pumpkin and Apple Soup.

The boys had spider cakes - left over from Halloween and George had a scone with jam and cream.

We then headed back to the cottage to strip off all the bedding and to clean the cottage ready for the next set of guests.  Tonight we will stay in George's house ready for an early start tomorrow.

This evening we are going down to the Ferryboat Inn for a Bonfire on the beach at six and then something to eat.

We have had such a lovely break away and it has been soooo wonderful to see my best friend.

But all good things come to an end and  I am missing my darling husband and it will be lovely to see him again.

The boys will also be excited to see their Dad again!

Can't upload photos as the camera battery is flat - will upload them later in the week.

A November Mawnan Morning

Today, after cooking breakfast for Seb, George and myself,  I returned the hire car and was very relieved to get it back to the car rental place without any bumps or scratches.  They gave me a lift back to the cottage and it was a lovely drive back looking at the beautiful countryside in the crisp autumn sunshine.

However, back at the Cottage while we bundled oursleves up in coats, scarves and wellies it soon started to rain.  We decided to brave it anyway and walked into Mawnan village to buy milk from the grocery store.

Then we stopped at the Cornish Maid where I had a cup of Earl Grey Tea and a slice of Bakewell Tart, George went for the Chocolate Brownie.

We popped into the charity shop and bought a Bob the Builder DVD for Nat and a lovely little heart decoratation for me.

Nat took this photo!

Next Seb and I went to look at the local Blacksmith at work.

Finally we walked back via the park and we enjoyed playing on the roundabout and the swings.

Back at the cottage we had Tomato soup for lunch and then relaxed and played with the children for a while.

Finally we headed out again around the corner to Carwinion Gardens where George persuaded the owner to serve us with little pots of cornish icecream.

We headed back to the cottage eating our ice-cream and then hung out for the rest of the afternoon and I prepared dinner for this evening.

We had a nice meal with George and Joe and I called David to say hi and to check how he is getting on without us.

Not long now only one more day and we will soon be home again!
