Sew Easy

This term I have started an evening class in beginners dress making.  I am quite excited to be on a course where I hope to learn how to make a skirt and how to use a sewing machine.  I have borrowed my Mum'a Elna machine as I don't own my own.

Last Friday I even went on a one day 'Get to know your sewing machine' course held by Portslade Community College at Foredown Tower.  It was a really excellent course and really well worth doing.

Firstly we learned to identify the different parts of a sewing machine then we learned how to clean and oil our machines.

We covered threading the machines and also learned about different types of needles and threads and when to use them.

We practiced paper stitching to learn how to follow straight lines, zig zags and curved lines.

We then practiced stitching on material and tried out all the different decorative stiches that are available on our machines and the different stitch lengths.

We also learned how to make a gathered piece of material and also how to sew on elastic.

I was really pleased to have done the course and it was really helpful for week two of my Sew Easy course.

I have selected a skirt pattern and now I need to purchase some material to make it from.

This week we learned how to make an open seam and how to finish the seam edges.

I think I am going to really enjoy the course and once I gain some confidence in using the machine and different techniques I am hoping to try out my new skills on some fun projects!
