Last night I went to a local church to hear a talk from David Cook, former principal of the Sydney Missionary and Bible College. David was reading from Acts 8:26-39, the passage where Philip is told to travel down the desert road from Jerusalem to Gaza and encounters an Ethiopian Eunuch and important official of the Queen of Ethiopia reading from Isaiah. Philip ends up explaining Isaiah to the eunuch and sharing the gospel with him, as a result of which the eunuch ends up getting baptised.
David Cook was using the passage to explain how God is not just interested in the many but he is interested in and cares about the individual and that nothing happens by chance but is all part of God's plan. We never know when a chance encounter or a conversation is actually an opportunity to be part of God's mission in this world. It was a really good evening and a very thought provoking preach.
Today was a fairly dull and uneventful day. I spent the day at work and had quite a busy day with lots of deadlines to meet. Also had a rather exhausing battle with some mental arithmetic and a calculator when I just could not get some figures to add up but I finally got there in the end.
Seb has some tests at school next week so I am trying to encourage him to brush up on his maths (clearly judging by my maths skills I might not be the best person to be helping him!). He is also trying to revise for science which I am finding very frustrating. The teacher has sent two text books home to help us refresh on the subjects Seb has studied this year but text books simply are not the same as when I was at school - they don't provide all the facts and information just ask a lot of questions but fail to provide the answers. I wondered if it was just me not knowing where to look for the correct responses but when I complained to Seb's science teacher at parents evening the teacher replied "oh yeah, that's because I have a separate book with all the answers in it". Wells thats just great! I can ask the questions but how am I supposed to know if Seb is giving me the right answers??
To be honest I might do just as well to give up on the text books and google the questions to get the right information. They sure don't make it easy to learn these days! You have to be really motivated (or have a mum who is prepared to do all the background research for you!)
Anyway I will be really glad when next week is over and we can return to normal homework and leisure activities.
To take a break from revision, this is a chocolate cake I baked for our friend Ray for his birthday. It is filled with Raspberry Jam, chocolate frosting, mini marshmallows and is decorated with chocolate covered raisins. David and Seb were none too pleased to learn that it was not for them and that they had to settle for the few left-over blueberry and lemon drizzle cupcakes! Worse - turns out Ray is on a diet (that he actually intends to stick to) so won't even be eating it himself anyway. Bad luck boys!!
