The Olympic Torch and a Diamond Jubilee Medal

The Olympic torch left Greece yesterday and has been flown to England where it will now start it's tour of the UK.  It commences its journey in Cornwall.  My best friend George and her family were planning to go and see it today before going off to celebrate her birthday.

The torch actually will come along the bottom of our road in July.  Unfortunately it is the day before we fly to Spain for our holiday so I am hoping I can get out of work and back home in time to see it.  Not sure whether they will close the surrounding roads though so that could cause a bit of a problem!

We have been fortunate enough to secure tickets for a couple of Olympic events for David, his mum Hazel, Seb and I.  Initially I had hoped to see some Gymnastics but we were not successful in getting tickets.  However, we did get tickets for one of the early athletic heats, plus the table tennis and synchronised swimming pairs.

I think the ticket sellers made a bit of a mistake though and somehow managed to sell more synchronised swimming tickets than were actually available as we got a telephone call asking whether we would be prepared to swap our tickets for a different event.  Guess what?  As an alternative we were offered the womens Gymanstic finals - how about that! Of course I very reluctantly agreed to change our synchronised swimming pairs for Gymnastics final tickets!  I cannot wait!

My Dad will be taking my ticket for the table tennis though as the thought of trying to get into London three times in one week was just a little too much to bear and my Dad was quite keen to have the chance to go and see something.  David is obviously used to the journey as he works there although it will be interesting to see what impact the Olympics have on his daily commute.

We are also all building up to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.  So far we have not got any plans or celebrations arranged.  Seb has been given the date for his MRI scan on the Saturday of the bank holiday weekend and we are planning to drive down to Cornwall on the Bank Holiday Monday so no street parties for us.  I am rather hoping we can do something while we are in Cornwall.

We have all been issued with our Diamond Jubilee medals at work (well those of us with at least five years service and an unblemished conduct record).  I was quite pleased to receive my medal as it is a lovely momento and souvenir.  Might be the only heirloom I have to pass onto my children!

This morning we had a women's day at my church. I could only go along for the morning session as our niece Lucy was celebrating her 18th birthday and I had already committed to a family lunch.

The morning commenced with coffee and then worship and moved into a talk, group discussions around tables, more coffee with scones, jam and cream and another talk at which point I had to leave.  It was a shame not to be able to stay longer as the topic of the morning was abiding in God's prescence and abiding in God's word but I was glad I had been able to attend for some of the day.  It was also nice to see some old friends who I haven't seen for a while as our Church recently went to multi-site venues so some of my friends now meet in different locations to me on a Sunday morning.

The family lunch was also really pleasant and it was nice to catch up on all the family news. Lucy seemed to like the birthday present we had given her which was just as well as we had had her name and a birthday message engraved onto it so she couldn't have returned it anyway!
