The Good Life

Despite the miserable drizzle my husband and I decided to plant out the few vegetables that have been germinating in our conservatory for the past couple of weeks. As I planted neat rows of baby corn, courgette, tomatoes and runner beans I felt quite pleased with myself and started imagining myself in an episode of the Good Life.  In the raised bed next to mine, my husband planted out some lettuce and cauliflower.  We stood back and admired our first gardening efforts of the year.

Last year we enjoyed building our raised beds (we even concreted the bricks ourselves (using a desert spoon as a trowel I might add!).  Amazingly the beds have lasted the winter but not so the awful clear plastic we had put down as a cheap skate weed barrier.  Unfortunately we never got as far as covering it with pebbles or bark chippings and so the weeds have pushed through and the plastic is all torn between the beds. Hopefully we might finish the job off properly this year and at least pretend we are serious gardeners!  Not sure what our neighbours made of our ridiculous chirade last year.  For all our efforts we had a few measly carrots, a couple of rotten pumpkins and one whole strawberry!

Hopefully we shall have more success this year providing our first transplanting is not detroyed by frost.   Although it is May the weather has been bitterly cold and wet (and still they insist we are in a drought!)
